Accidental Counsellor Training – Ermington NSW

The ‘Accidental Counsellor’ or ‘Helper’ role is a first aid only role. It is important to be aware of the boundaries in this role (which will depend on whether you are in a work, friendship, family or other context), and not to offer long-term support unless this is part of your existing relationship with the person.

People in distress want someone to listen to them, they don’t want advice, and that it really helps to have someone give them the space to explore their own thoughts and feelings. Just sitting with someone’s negative feelings can lower distress.

Participants will learn:

• How to apply the principles of recognise, respond and refer to someone who is experiencing an emotional crisis.

• Demonstrate key communication skills

• Define the importance of self-care
