It takes seven hours from Alice Springs to drive along unsealed roads to reach Canteen Creek. But in October 2023, our Wesley LifeForce staff made the long trip from Darwin and the Central Coast of New South Wales to meet with Canteen Creek’s Aboriginal community to discuss ways to reduce suicide amongst young people in their remote community.
From this meeting, Wesley LifeForce’s Canteen Creek Suicide Prevention Network was born and is now helping save lives. Along with their allocated $5000 seed funding, the network received significant funding from the Northern Territory Primary Suicide Health Network to launch a youth program, run by Aboriginal locals. The network is now seeking funding to refurbish an existing youth centre to help prevent suicide among young people.
